Site Status
« on: December 28, 2014 - 10:41:41 »
As you know the forums has been down for a few days. This was due to a problem with our hosts who don't seem to react very quickly (if at all). I know it's Christmas and all that but the world doesn't stop turning. The hosting package we were using was very limited and didn't offer much by way of configuration options or access to the innards so we can fix any issues ourselves.

I've got the forum back up and running on a temporary platform - namely a VM in my house... and *most* of the functionality is there. No avatars, no site logo, a few spurious errors here and there but hopefully it's 95% functional and enough to get through. If you encounter anything serious that prevents normal operations then report. If it's cosmetic then don't... this is temporary.

Going forward..... the forum is moving to a proper VPS with proper access and all that it entails - both good and bad. The bad being if something goes wrong we have to fix it ourselves. The RS budget really does not come close to paying for a support contract!

It will take some days for me to get the server set up and running so please be patient.

Appreciate all you're doing TC (and the rest of the Mods).

Cheers

Just a thought, do the attachments use your bandwidth?

If so, if anyone is posting attachements, anything over a meg in size, please consider uploading them to a file sharing site.

and here's me thinking i was banned...
i mean, the response was too quick, like a generic template or summat?!  ;D (but a view via vpn gave the same output. not logged in using it, so please, no unwarranted conclusions.)
anyway, good to see site is back on air.
...
now the farce of xmas is over, can't wait for the warmer weather to return... 8)

Just to keep you all in the loop, the new server is up and running and we can go live with it in the next few days. To ensure no posts are lost this temporary forum will be put into maintenance mode while the shift of data takes place. The forum on the new server will also be put into maintenance mode until the DNS changes propagate and we're all singing from the same page - literally.

So, bear with me for the time being. It should all be sorted soon. FWIW I'm informed that the DB issues have been sorted but there's no way I'm going back to that config/host. We're looking forward, not back.

OK... tomorrow this site will go into maintenance mode to allow for a DB backup. DNS changes will be made and the DB will be restored onto the new server and the site will be tested again by admins. Once we're satisfied the new forum will be taken out of maintenance mode.

So if you see the site in maintenance message you're looking at the old site. If you see the forum as expected then it's the new site.
