Title: Henk's Free Adventures
Post by: 65Cobra427SC on June 14, 2017 - 18:40:52
Wondered if anyone was familiar with an adventure game collection called Henk's Free Adventures. It included 2,400+ adventure games and was posted in the newsgroups back in 2010... maybe earlier. It was broken down into individual zip files of 50 games each. I have a small part of the collection but newsgroup retention wasn't like it is today and was never able to finish. Curiosity got the best of me when I ran across the files today. It looked like a really nice collection back then so I was surprised when a Google search came up empty.

Indeed Google does come up empty! What OS did they run on? Were they text only or graphical? Care to share some of your collection so we can take a peek?

They're on another hard drive which I'll be able to get to later today... I'm in the middle of something at the moment.

I recall... and I'm old so take that with a grain of salt  ;D  but each download had 50 games and included an index with the titles of those 50 games plus a small screenshot of each one. It's possible some of the screenshots showed text, so there may be some text adventures in the collection, but the vast majority of them had to be graphic adventures. One thing I don't remember at the moment is if they were all DOS based, Windows based or a mix of both.

I haven't looked at them in years but I'll post whatever indexes I have which will give you a better idea of what's included, then we can take it from there. Whoever did this clearly spent a lot of time organizing and creating the indexes but I never saw them in the newsgroups again. After a while I just forgot about them.

More later

Just in case we are talking about a ScummVM based adventure collection...  I think Gruby's AdventurePack (,4529.0.html) is the King in the ring. 3427 games at the moment. Maybe this Henk collection is obsolet. If this are non ScummVM games then I am highly interested.

Thanks Golfe.

I never heard of Gruby's AdventurePack so I took a look and I'm positive what I have is an early version of that pack.

I sent Gruby a PM letting him know about this thread so hopefully we'll hear from him soon. But there are just too many similarities between the two packs.

The dates of my files vary from 2007 thru 2010 and based on the text files, the Henk's version would have had about 2,400 games at the time. There are also references to using programs such as scummVM, DosBox, etc. I find it unlikely that Gruby would find any benefit with what I have but I'll leave things be until I hear more.

In case anyone is interested, the attached zip file contains an index for each of the 10 parts I have. Quality is just okay but they're good enough to make out the name of each game and recognize the picture. So, for what it's worth  :D

The attached zip file contains various lists of ALL the games that were included within Henk's Free Adventures. So although I don't have all the games, these lists show every game that was available at that time. There are several variations of the list. One folder includes 47 Excel files containing 50 games each. Another folder includes the same lists in text format. There is also a text file listing all the games in alphabetical order which I cleaned up a bit.

I figured out where most (if not all) of these games came from... Adventure Game Studio. You can search or list their games, so I pulled up a list of all their games and sorted them in date order... oldest date first. And the first 20 games on their list were also on my list. I randomly chose others and they're on the list as well.

Thanks antmac for posting the files but after thinking about this I really don't intend to keep them. If anyone else wants them, for whatever reason, please let me know and some arrangement will be made. If there is more than one request it should go to whoever has the best intentions... i.e. passing them on to others. Otherwise they're going the way of the Dodo bird.

Another thought is to consider if the games I actually have are already part of Gruby's collection. If so then I could just delete them and no harm done.

Just an fyi, the partial collection I had was taken away by the Dodo bird this morning. But it's not like they're gone forever since apparently you can download them from the Adventure Game Studio website. Besides it appears some games have been updated over the years. Thanks all for solving the mystery ;D
