I'm just too old to be a completionist anymore, and what am I honestly going to do with 5 copies of a ROM title, 4 of which are in a language I don't understand.
I agree, but what is the problem in just collecting a partial dat? "Completionist" Dats will show you all possible variants, then you can just choose not to download the ones you don't need. As long as you are not obsessed with having only green lights in ClrMAME Pro, this is a fine and relatively easy way. At least for systems like PS2. If you absolutely need the green light, open the dat in a text editor and remove all the entries you don't want.
For systems that NoIntro covers, as already pointed out Datomatic is by far the easiest way to go: [You are not allowed to view links]
Just set the options as you wish and generate your own dat. If you are worried about missing clones with a different name, the parent/clone tabs can help a lot. For example see this in Megadrive/Genesis:
0100 - Alisia Dragoon (Europe)
0101 - Alisia Dragoon (Japan)
0102 - Alisia Dragoon (USA)
0103 - Altered Beast (USA, Europe)
0691 - Juuouki (Japan)
0692 - Juuouki (Japan) (v1.1)
